Tecno BOOM J8 Price in Nigeria.

Asian smartphone maker – Tecno Mobile – after hitting Nigeria with a shit-storm of shady devices back in 2013/2014 finally have a strategy.

Instead of slamming phones having similar specs but different names to the masses, they have finally decided to settle for 5 major series of smartphones.

  • The Phantom Series (top of the line devices),
  • The Camon Series (camera-centric devices),
  • The Boom Series (devices for music lovers),
  • The L series (power gods), and,
  • The W series (budget kings).

In the boom series, two (2) devices were debuted last year – Boom J5 and Boom J7, with the later getting positive reviews from end users.

A new device has been launched it the Boom Series, the Tecno BOOM J8, and to be honest, it’s a huge upgrade to its predecessors.

Tecno BOOM J8 Overview

As usual, let’s begin with the form factor.

Form Factor

Comparing the BOOM J8’s design and build to that of the BOOM J7, it is evident that the Tecno design team literally binned the blueprints of the J7 and started all over!

What am I saying?

Simple. The Boom J8 does not in any way resemble its predecessor.

In redesigning the device, it also seems like the team got inspired by the iPhone ‘cos as MissTechy stated:

“The first time I showed off this device, someone said it looked like the iPhone 6 at first glance.”

Whatever!

Bottom line is; the device looks good.

At the back of the device is a 13MP shooter with an LED flash (top left corner) and the TECNO brand name boldly written somewhere close to the center of the device.

Tecno Boom J8 Back

In front: at the top is a 5MP shooter, a flashlight, and a sensor.

The device does not have the physical touch buttons (Options, Home, Back) so on screen buttons it is.

The speakers of this device (like the iPhone 6) was crafted beneath the phone, so placing the Boom J8 on a flat surface will not in any way muffle the sound being produced.

For more pictures of the device, read TechCity’s or MissTechy’s unboxing post.

Display

From the spec – sheet, there’s nothing spectacular about the Boom J8’s display, like every other budget smartphone it’s just normal.

At 5.5” and a resolution of 720 x 1280 pixels, the Tecno Boom J8 has a pixel density of 267; similar to that of the Infinix hot 3.

Camera

The primary camera of this device has 13million pixels for capturing images and lighting in low light conditions is provided by a single LED flash placed beside it.

In front, the phone has a 5MP camera for video calls (who even does this in Nigeria) and taking selfies (yeah, that’s more like it). The front facing camera also has its own flash too for improved lighting.

I cannot speak on the features of both cameras at the moment as I have no word on that yet.

Processor

It’s a budget smartphone, so you should expect a budget chipset, and the king of budget chipsets is MediaTek.

Tecno for this device made use of MediaTek’s MT6735 chipset. (I don’t think Tecno has actually patronized any other vendor for Soc since inception except the in the case of the winpad).

MT6735 is a 64-bit quad-core WorldMode 4G LTE platform based on ARM’s Cortex A-53 processor which delivers performance significantly higher than the successful Cortex A7.

Jargon abi?

Yeah, even me sef no understand am finish, na copy I copy am from two scholars; Scholar 1, Scholar 2. 😛

But here’s what you should know (and understand) about the chip.

  • The chipset has clock speed of 1.3GHz
  • The chip uses the Mali-T720 GPU which delivers graphics way better than the T-400 that is everywhere (Infinix Hot 3)
  • The Soc supports 4G LTE

Not a bad Soc if you ask me and by the way, some notable devices also running on this chipset include;

  • Gionee M5
  • Lenovo Vibe P1m
  • Huawei Enjoy 5
  • Meizu M2

Processor

Chipset MediaTek MT6735

Memory

Nothing much to talk about here. Just know that the Boom J8 features 2GB RAM and 16GB ROM (which can be extended by the use of an SD Card)

The maximum capacity of external memory the device supports is unknown to me at the moment, but some spec sheets suggest 128GB.

RAM 2GB
Internal Storage 16GB
SD card Support Yes

Battery

For this device, Tecno chose to go with a non-removable battery to keep the device as slim at it is (trust me, 7.35mm is impressive).

Some folks might not like the idea of a non-removable battery. Questions which could potentially show up are:

  • What if the device gets stuck?
  • What if the battery stops functioning?
  • What if the phone drops into water?

Well, that’s why you have Carl care.

The capacity of this non-removable Li-Ion battery is 3000mAh.

Will that be enough for a full day’s run?

Well, it totally depends on how you use the device. On moderate usage, and low screen brightness the battery should get you through the day. But if you are the guy that loves gaming and worst of all online hardcore gaming, baba go buy power bank.

The BOOM J8 also supports fast-charge and according to specs, 15min charge would ensure you 8 long (boring) hours of phone calls.
