Software, Design, Display
Right off the bat, you should know that this device, the Nokia 8 Sirocco, is the most powerful Android one device in the world right now.
It’s a dual (hybrid) SIM LTE enabled smartphone running on an unadulterated version of the Oreo flavor (version 8.0) of the Android operating system right out the box.
And thanks to the fact that the device is part of Google’s Android One program, it is slated to receive software updates directly from Google for at least two years.
What this means is, Android Q (slated for release at the end of next year) would most definitely be coming to this device.
Design-wise, Nokia pulled a Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge on this one.
I say that because the Nokia 8 Sirocco possesses an all-glass form factor with the sides of the display curving/wrapping around it — just like the S7 Edge!
Only available in black, the 8 Sirocco’s front and back glass sandwich is separated by a stainless steel frame (like the iPhone X) and, for the first time in a recent Nokia device, has an IP rating for dust and water resistance — IP67.
The awesome looking display on this device is a quad-HD 5.5-inch P-OLED panel which is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5.
Performance, Hardware, Cameras
Underneath all of the glass featured on the external part of the 8 Sirocco sits one of Qualcomm’s flagship SoCs — the Snapdragon 835 — which makes the device an Octa-core CPU one having two separate quad-core CPU clusters — one clocked at 2.5 GHz and the other at 1.8.
For pushing graphics, the device employs the Adreno 540 GPU and for a seamless multitasking experience, a massive 6GB of RAM is present — that’s more gigabytes than the usable internal memory of some Android ‘smartphones’ in the market today!
Speaking of internal memory, the Nokia 8 Sirocco features more than you may ever require.
At 128GB, there’d most definitely be no lack of where to store data using the 8 Sirocco but if, for some awkward reasons, you’d be needing more space you can throw in a microSD card (capacities up to 256GB) to extend the onboard storage.
Moving on …
The Cameras
The primary camera setup on the Nokia 8 Sirocco is a dual one — A dual camera setup with so many bells and whistles.
This setup consists two 12-megapixel lenses aligned vertically at the center of the of the device with one lens (the primary one) having a fairly wide aperture width of about f/1.75 and the other (the telephoto lens) having a relatively smaller f/2.6 aperture.
The setup, optimized by Carl Zeiss, supports dual-pixel Phase Detection Auto Focus (whatever that means), 2x Optical Zoom (thanks to the presence of the secondary telephoto lens) and 4k video shots at 30 frames per second.
In front, for selfies and snaps, sits a 5-megapixel shooter which is capable of recording 1080p videos at 30fps.
For security, the device relies on the Fingerprint reader mounted ‘in the right position’ at the back of the device just below the camera setup.
Finally, the battery providing the juice to power all of this ‘madness’ is a 3260 mAh Li-Ion cell which supports fast charging (Quick Charge 3.0).
Other features worth mentioning include:
- Bluetooth 5 is on here!
- WiFi is dual-band,
- The headphone jack was killed, 🙁
- Charging can be done wirelessly
